The business case for electrification – CPP November Webinar
Dr Carl Tidemann, Senior Researcher at the Climate Council will be presenting the key findings and recommendations of the recently released report ‘Switch and Save: How gas is costing households’. Dr Carl will also talk about the award winning ‘Home Appliance Savings Calculator’ online tool created to accompany the release of the report as well as future planned work on energy efficiency in homes and buildings.
Kate Jackson, Coordinator Community Sustainability at Inner West Council NSW, Dayna Surlan, Project Consultant, Sustainability at WSP and Matthew Clarke, Director at Common Capital have joined forces to develop a business case for electrification of apartment buildings under 6 storeys.
Kate, Dayna & Matthew will be taking us through:
Inner West Council’s recent study with WSP and Common Capital to support “low carbon high performance” precincts
The emissions of lower rise developments and refurbishments (below 6 storeys),
Findings and recommendations of the study, including the impact of electrification and its cost-benefit analysis.
In 2021 Merri-bek City Council (formerly Moreland City Council, VIC) launched its Electrify Everything: Communications Message Guide for Households. An Australian-first, the guide is based on qualitative market research undertaken to inform the electrification communications campaign for homes. Merri-bek is now leading a Community of Practice with over 80 local council officers focused on communicating the importance of electrification for Australia’s energy transition and how households can get involved.

How to make Electric Vehicles and the power grid work: new report
A new University of Melbourne and Energy Networks Australia report has highlighted how sensible electric vehicle policy settings will support the power system and help customers save money.
The recommendations reflect two years’ research into customer use of EVs and their impact on the grid. They provide milestones for actions by governments, networks and market bodies for the short, medium and long term.
The recommendations include electricity pricing that rewards customers for charging vehicles when electricity is plentiful; smart chargers to help move charging to when electricity is cheap; smart meters with EV smart chargers and the adoption of international standards.

The primary barrier to EV adoption remains a lack of vehicle supply. To address this challenge there is an urgent need for a strong and serious national EV strategy.

Electrification at the City of Yarra
This is a report on progress made by the City of Yarra in the electrification of hand-held, petrol- powered tools used by teams based at the Council depot.

Most hand tools have been electrified
Most of the hand tools based at the City of Yarra depot have been electrified including blowers, hedge trimmers (including an extension trimmer), chain saws (including an extension saw), brush cutters, mower, post-hole auger and backpack spray units.
