What Council has achieved in the past in energy efficiency, renewable energy or broader sustainability
Camden Council recognises the need for action on climate change and has recently adopted targets for emission reduction and improvements to energy management as part of its Sustainability Strategy 2020-24. A number of projects have also either been completed or are already underway to improve energy efficiency and increase the use of renewables at Council facilities.
Council has installed ten rooftop solar systems on Council facilities, with a combined capacity of almost 400 kilowatts, to offset energy use and reduce the emissions associated with their operations.
Through delivery of the Built for Comfort program, Council provides residents with resources and free tailored advice to assist in the design and construction of new homes and renovations. The program helps to ensure new homes are energy efficient, cost effective and comfortable all year round.
Council has also been working steadily to improve its organisational sustainability through the NSW Government’s Sustainability Advantage Program, becoming a silver partner in June 2021.
What Council hopes to achieve in the future in energy efficiency, renewable energy or broader sustainability
Council will continue to build on its successes using the program of actions outlined in the Sustainability Strategy, which includes actions focussed on emissions reduction, building resilience and adapting to climate change, and working with our community and other partners.
Council is working with Endeavour Energy to upgrade more than 7,000 inefficient streetlights to new high efficiency LEDs. This change will reduce our carbon emissions by an estimated 2,100 tonnes annually. We are also continuing to install LED street lighting in all new developments.
Camden Council is part of a Power Purchase Agreement to source 100% renewable energy for all of our major sites, including street lighting, from January 2023. This will deliver significant reductions in emissions while providing support to the renewable energy sector.
Work is underway on a net zero emissions strategy for the organisation to identify opportunities to continue to reduce emissions.
What does Council hope to gain from being a member of the Cities Power Partnership?
Given the growth that is expected to occur within the Camden local government area over coming years, there is a real opportunity for Council to ensure new developments are sustainable and efficient. As a society, we know we must change the way we do things to preserve our environment and build a secure and safe future. We are looking forward to working closely with other councils, and our community, to build and share our knowledge.
