Climate Summit for Local Government
Join us for afternoon tea at 3pm AEDT Thursday 17th March as we hear from Zoe McMaster from Moreland City Council. As part of their Ride & Stride initiative, they are testing, monitoring and evaluating projects that provide children with safe, healthy and equal access to their streets.
In order to increase uptake of sustainable transport modes in our local communities to mitigate against intensifying climate changes and population growth, we need to be honest about what modes of transport our local streets currently prioritise and how to rebalance the playing field. By allowing children, local residents and families to reimagine and reclaim their neighbourhood streets, we are working towards solutions that empower communities to choose healthier, happier ways to move around. Learn how Moreland delivered three of Australia’s first Open Streets outside local primary schools, the outcomes of these trials, lessons to scale to other councils and longer term opportunities for reimagining local streets and neighbourhoods.

Zoe McMaster works as Moreland’s Sustainable Communities Officer, delivering a variety of behaviour change sustainability programs, most notably leading the ‘Ride & Stride’ active travel program and the ‘Open Streets’ initiative. Zoe uses behavioural science to understand community enablers and barriers to active and sustainable movement and place in Moreland, and works on designing and delivering evidence-based active transport and placemaking behaviour change programs to create happier, healthier streets for people.
