Climate Summit for Local Government

Sept 6-8, 2023 | Melbourne

Collaborating with community to achieve Net Zero – with Greater Bendigo & Macedon Ranges

For councils to commit to their own corporate emissions reduction target is one thing, but to successfully engage with their community to set a community emissions reduction target also, is quite a challenge! For our September webinar, you’ll be hearing from two neighbouring Victorian councils who have managed to do just that; the City of Greater Bendigo and Macedon Ranges Shire Council

Join us on Thursday 8 September at 2pm AEST for a very special community collaboration session that deep dives into the challenges faced and lessons learned on their respective journeys.

We’ll hear about the Greater Bendigo Climate Collaboration that is currently underway. They have pulled together leading Bendigo organisations, community groups and government agencies for three years of collective climate action and projects in Bendigo and across the region, with the aim of creating a local and regional roadmap to zero emissions by 2030.

And we’ll also hear about the Macedon Ranges Community Climate Action Plan “Cool Changes” program, how the program ties in with their broader Climate Emergency Response Plan and the challenges they’ve encountered as well as their success stories.

Speakers are:

  • Ian McBurney, Coordinator Greater Bendigo Climate Collaboration, City of Greater Bendigo.

For 22 years Ian has worked as an ecological sustainability educator, speaker, facilitator, business mentor and entrepreneur. Last November Ian joined the City of Greater Bendigo as Coordinator of the Greater Bendigo Climate Collaboration.

  • Justin Walsh, Sustainability Officer, Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

With a mix of Environmental Science and Community Development education and a background of working amongst environmental & outdoor education not-for-profit organisations, Justin is passionate about helping people connect to the environment and each other. Within Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Justin delivers the Cool Changes program which facilitates the creation of community-led, place-based Climate Action Plans in townships throughout the Shire.
