Australia’s largest floating solar farm to be launched in northern NSW has the backing of a network of 70 councils – representing more than 7.5 million people – who are pledging to cut greenhouse gas pollution in their backyards.
The project in Lismore is being buoyed by the Cities Power Partnership, which at Tuesday’s launch will call on all Australian councils to sign up to the landmark initiative.
“It’s clear that Australians support climate action from their council. We’re calling on all local governments to join the groundswell of climate action spreading across the country,” International climate scientist and climate councillor Professor Will Steffen said in a statement.
The solar farm floats on the surface of an overflow pond at the East Lismore Sewage Treatment Plant and its generated electricity will be used to partially power the plant.
The project – a collaboration between Lismore City Council and Farming the Sun – will produce about 180,000 kilowatts of electricity annually and power 12 per cent of the plant, the council says.
