Discovery Workshop: Identifying collaborative opportunities for WA councils

23 Nov 2021
10:00am - 11:15am
Online Event
To help Western Australian councils accelerate climate action, Cities Power Partnership and WALGA are co-delivering an online workshop for council officers on November 23rd, 2021.

Set within the context of WA’s energy transformation, the aim of the workshop is to provide clarity on the challenges councils are encountering. The findings will be used to explore how collaboration can provide an opportunity to overcome barriers identified and scale impact.

Significant opportunities are emerging for councils to work together to achieve ambitious emissions reduction. Hearing directly from councils about problems encountered will assist with focusing efforts on the most feasible emission reduction initiatives.

The virtual workshop will seek to answer the following questions:

  • What emission reduction opportunities are councils most interested in?
  • What information and data is needed to promote good decision making, accelerate steep emissions reduction and develop a pathway to net zero emissions?
  • What challenges have you encountered in the past when seeking to collaborate?
  • What specific climate communication issues arise for sustainability officers when trying to communicate climate risk or the need for climate action?

Desired Outcomes

  • Discover key problem areas that WA councils are encountering when implementing climate initiatives.
  • Gather insights to assist alignment on future collaboration opportunities for WA councils.
  • Identify climate communication issues.

Agenda

  • WA’s energy transformation and the case for steep emissions reduction.
Speaker: Ray Wills, University of Western Australia
  • Decarbonising WA’s electricity grid: what’s next for councils?
    Speaker: Toby Costanzo, WALGA.
  • Facilitated workshop.

Input from the November workshop will be used to design two roundtable discussions for metropolitan and south-west WA councils in early 2022. These roundtable events will work towards providing a structured approach for collaborative emission reduction initiatives.
