In our August webinar, we heard Climate Councillor Prof. Lesley Hughes give a presentation to our member councils that unpacks the findings of the latest IPCC report and what it means for local government. This webinar was held on Tuesday 24 August at 3pm AEST.
On the 9th of August, 2021 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest report, which is a comprehensive assessment of the physical science of climate change.
The report is years in the making and draws from a new generation of highly advanced climate models and scenarios which finds that the situation is critical, but the report also shows that we can avoid a future of truly catastrophic warming – if we act now.
- Professor Lesley Hughes is a Distinguished Professor of Biology and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Integrity and Development) at Macquarie University in NSW. Her research has mainly focused on the impacts of climate change on species and ecosystems. She is a former federal Climate Commissioner and former Lead Author in the IPCC’s 4th and 5th Assessment Report. She is a founding Councillor with the Climate Council of Australia, a Director for WWF Australia, and a member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists.
